Bass Clef- F clef
Treble Clef- G clef

MARKINGS
A2- Play the same part (after a divisi)
Accent- Emphasize the note or chord
Bar Line- divides the music staff into measures
Breath Mark- take a breath
Coda- The ending section of a piece of music
Da Capo (D.C.)- At this sign, return to the beginning of the song, then continue playing
Del Segno (D.S.)- At this sign, return to the sign, then continue playing
Divisi- divide the part among available players
Fermata- Hold the note as long as the director indicates
Fine- Finished, the end
First/ Second Ending-play 1st ending first time through; then,repeat music, skip first ending,and play 2nd ending
Flat- lowers the pitch of a note 1/2 step
Grand Staff- the treble and bass staff combined
Key Signature- sharps or flats written after the clef
Leger Line- short line used to extend the staff
Natural- cancels a flat or sharp
Repeat- double dotted bar line meaning to repeat a section or division of music
Sharp- raises the pitch of a note 1/2 step
Slur- curved line that connects two or more notes of different pitches
Soli- whole section plays
Solo- one person plays
Tie- curved line that connects two notes of the same pitch
Trill- rapid alternation between two notes
Tutti- everyone plays
Unison- everyone plays the same notes and rhythms

Dotted Half Note- gets 3 beats of sound
Dotted Quarter Note- gets 1 1/2 beats of sound
Dotted Quarter Rest- gets 1 1/2 beats of silence
Eighth Note- gets 1/2 beat of sound
Eighth Rest- gets 1/2 beat of silence
Half Note- 2 beats of sound
Half Rest- 2 beats of silence
Quarter Note- 1 beat of sound
Quarter Rest- 1 beat of silence
Sixteenth Note- gets 1/4 beat of sound
Sixteenth Rest- gets 1/4 beat of silence
Whole Note- gets 4 beats of sound
Whole Rest- gets 4 beats of silence

Articulation- type of attack used to play a note or group of notes
Cantabile- In a singing style
Dolce- Sweetly
Expressivo- In an expressive manner
Legato- play as smoothly as possible
Marcato- marked, stressed
Meno Mosso- less motion

Pesante- heavy, ponderous

A tempo- Return to the original speed
Accelerando- To gradually accelerate the tempo
Adagio- Slowly, leisurely; slower than andante
Allargando- Growing broader and slower
Allegretto- Moderately fast; faster than moderato, slower than allegro
Allegro- Quick and lively
Andante- Moderately slow
Andantino- Slightly slow; faster than andante
Con Brio- With brilliance
Con Motto- With motion
Grandioso- in a grand manner
L'istesso- the same
Largo- slow
Lento- slow, slowly
Maestoso- majestically
Moderato- moderate speed
Prestissimo- very fast
Presto- fast,rapid
Rallentando- gradually slower
Ritardando- gradually slow the tempo
Ritenuto- immediate reduction of speed
Rubato- Take liberties with the tempo
Stringendo- Hastening, accelerating the movement
Tempo Primo- Play at the first tempo of the song
Tempo- speed of music
Vivace- Lively, animated

TIME SIGNATURE
Alla Breve- Another name for cut time (2/2 time signature)
Common Time- Same thing as 4/4 time signature
Cut Time- Time signature equal to 2/2
Time Signature- top number tells you number of counts in each measure; bottom number tells you the type of receives one count

VOLUME MARKINGS
Crescendo- Get gradually louder
Decrescendo- Gradually get softer
Diminuendo- Gradually get softer
Dynamics- The volume of music
Forte- loud
Forte-piano- loud followed by soft
Fortissimo- very loud
Mezzo-Forte- medium loud
Mezzo-Piano- medium soft
Morendo- fading away
Pianissimo- very soft
Piano- soft

OTHER MUSIC TERMS
Arpeggios- The notes of a chord played in sucession
Enharmonic- notes that sound the same but are written differ- ently
Harmony- two or more different notes played or sung at the same time
Interval- distance between two notes
Measure- space between two bar lines
Melody- an organized succession of tones
Monophonic- a single unaccompanied melody
Phrase- musical thought or sentence
Polyphony- two or melodies played at the same time
Syncopation- a rhythmic effect which places emphasis on a weak or unaccented part of the measure
