Whitewater Middle School was recognized as a Georgia School of Excellence in 1997.

Sixth grade band students are divided into three classes, Advanced Sixth Grade Band Intermediate Band and Beginning Band. Advanced Sixth Grade Band and Intermediate Band are for those students who started band in the fifth grade and Beginning Band is for those students who are starting for the first time in sixth. Other performance organizations include the Symphonic Band 8th Grade Concert Band and 7th Grade Concert Band.

Some of the instructional opportunities given each student include the band computer lab. The students are instructed by computer in areas of music theory, music terminology and
fingering drill and practice. Of the 940 students enrolled at Whitewater Middle School, 255 participate in the band program, performing at concerts, assemblies, community and athletic events throughout the year.

The Whitewater Band has been invited to play at Walt Disney World, Six Flags Over Georgia, Opryland, and Universal Studios. The band was invited to play at the 1999 Georgia Music Educators Association State Music Convention and the 2001 University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band Festival.
