Mr. Melton received his Bachelor of Music in 1984 from
Columbus State University (Columbus, Georgia) where he graduated Magna Cum
Laude. He also received his Masters of Music from Columbus State University in
1985 where he served as a graduate assistant under Col. Hal Gibson. Mr. Melton
has been teaching for 20 years. He has been at Whitewater Middle School since it
opened in 1990. He also served as assistant band director at Fayette County High
School in Fayetteville, Georgia. Bands under his direction have played for
Chick-Fil-A founder Truett Cathy, former Atlanta Braves Dale Murphy, and former
Congressman Newt Gingrich. The band has also been invited to play at Walt Disney
World, Six Flags Over Georgia, and Opryland in Nashville. The band has also
been invited to play at the 1999 Georgia Music Educators’ State In-Service
Convention, and the 2001 University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band
Festival. In May 2000, Whitewater’s three bands Symphonic, Concert and Advanced
6th Grade Bands each placed first in their respective divisions at
the Music in the Parks competition. The Symphonic Band was also awarded
a gold rating and sweepstakes trophy at both the 2002 and 2004 Southern Star
Music Competition in Atlanta.
Mr. Melton was named Teacher of the Year for Whitewater
Middle School during the 2001-2002 school year. He was also named a 2001-2002
finalist for Teacher of the Year for the Fayette County School System.
He is currently a member of Music Educators National
Conference, Georgia Music Educators Association, National Band Association, and
the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
In addition to his band directing
responsibilities, his interests include band arranging and composing, church
music, electronic sequencing, recording and website design. He plays keyboard
in the praise band at Trinity Fellowship Assembly of God in Sharpsburg,
Georgia. He is married to Tammy Melton, who is an ordained minister, speaker
and private trumpet teacher. He has two children, Amy, 11 and Amber, 8.
