Whitewater Middle School Band Program
Whitewater Middle School opened in 1990 and has grown to a
current student enrollment of over 1100 students. It was
recognized as a Georgia School of Excellence in 1997. The
school is located in the southern part of Fayette County in
Fayetteville, Georgia. After attending middle school,
students go on to attend Whitewater High School.
The band program at Whitewater Middle
School has over 250 students. The teaching staff includes one
head director and one part- time director. Students in
Fayette County start band in the fifth grade. Our elementary
feeder schools are taught by Doug Dee, Kenneth Beard, Myra
Rhoden, and Jennifer Brinsony. Mr. Brinson also assists at
Whitewater Middle School. Sixth grade band students are
divided into Advanced and Intermediate/Beginning Band
classes. Students in the 7th and 8th
grade are divided into ability-based performing bands by
audition. Seventh and eighth grade students are placed into
either Symphonic or Concert Band. In addition to rehearsing
in their daily band class, Symphonic Band students also meet
two hours a week after school while the Concert Band meets one
hour a week after school. Each band student is expected to
practice 150 minutes a week. Students can turn in practice
records on paper or submit their practice record over the
Internet at
www.wmsband.org.
The E-practice record is an on-line practice record that
allows parents to submit their child’s record by using a
username and password.
The Symphonic Band has been invited to play at Walt Disney
World, Six Flags Over Georgia, Opryland, and Universal
Studios. The band was invited to play at the 1999 Georgia
Music Educators’ Association State Music Convention and the
2000 University of Georgia Middle School Honor Band Festival.
In May 2000, Whitewater’s three bands Symphonic, Concert, and
Advanced 6th Grade Bands each placed first in their
respective divisions at the Music in the Parks
competition. The band also received a gold rating and was
awarded the sweepstakes trophy at the 2002 and 2004 Southern
Star Music Festival in Atlanta. The Symphonic Band was
also invited to play at the 2005 Southern Division Music
Educators National Conference in Tampa, Fla. and the 2006
Southeastern United States Concert Band Festival at Troy State
University in Troy, Alabama. The Symphonic Band also
consistently receives superior ratings at district level Large
Group Festival. In addition, students from Whitewater
regularly qualify for District Honor Band and the Georgia
Middle School All-State Band as well as participate in local
Solo and Ensemble Festival.
